Pool Service April 2005
Gallagher Gab
April will be an important month for some pool owners.
While there is still a chill in the air, some of the days are sunny
and even warm. This sun means there will be some changes to some
of your pools. If you have a mesh winter cover this means sun can
go right through your cover to your water and begin feeding algae.
Mesh cover customers who have not already added some Liquid Chlorine
and Winter Treat would be well advised to add those chemicals to
help fight off the effects of sun on that algae. If you have a solid
cover that is torn and damaged or did not put a cover on your pool
at all, you may also want to add some chemicals now to help the
water remain clear until you open. While the store is getting more
and more busy, this is still an excellent time to come in and purchase
things you will need for your pool opening to beat the rush in May.
The opening season has already begun for some customers!
All of our crews are out every day opening pools, and we are already
booked up until the middle of June! In regards to opening your swimming
pool there are a few things you will want to consider. Get your
motor out of winter storage and dust off and check to be sure it
still works. If it does not work, you can bring it in to the store
to be worked on. Check your filter for cracks or holes, as well
as any grids or fingers, if you have a DE filter. You will need
Algicide 60, Stain and Scale and Liquid Chlorine to open the pool
(if you use chlorine and not Baquacil). You may want to pick those
up to have them ready when you open. To insure that your pool is
useable by a certain date, start opening several weeks before that
date in case there is a problem. Make sure your water level is half
way up the skimmer. If your pool has an algae growth in it, you
may need to add more chemicals when you open to clear it up. If
you have a DE filter, check and make sure there is enough DE to
backwash a few times while cleaning up the debris from the winter.
