May will be an important month for pool owners. While there is still a chill in the air, some of the days are sunny and even warm. This sun means there will be some changes to some of your pools. If you have a mesh winter cover this means sunlight can go right through your cover to your water and begin feeding algae. Mesh cover customers who have not already added some liquid chlorine and Winter Treat would be well advised to add those chemicals to help fight off the effects of sunlight on that algae. If you have a solid cover that is torn and damaged or did not put a cover on your pool at all you may also want to add some chemicals now to help the water remain clear until you open. Make sure your water has circulated for at least 24 hours before bringing a water sample to the store! This makes our test more accurate.

The opening season has begun! All of our crews are out every day opening pools, and we are already booked up until the end of June! In regards to opening your swimming pool there are a few things you will want to consider. You may want to get your motor out and make sure it still works. If it does not work, you can still bring it in to the store to be worked on. Check your filter for cracks or holes, as well as any grids or fingers if you have a DE filter. You will need chemicals to open the pool, so you may want to pick those up to have them ready when you open. Whatever date you want your pool to be usable by, you should start opening several weeks in advance. Make sure your water level is half way up the skimmer. If your pool has an algae growth in it, you may need to add more chemicals when you open to clear it up. If you have a DE filter, check and make sure there is enough DE to backwash a few times while cleaning up the debris from the winter.
